DANIELLE SMIRKED. “WHO’S the blood slave now?”
I tried in vain to conceal my smile as one of the servants removed the needle from my arm. I was impressed she could already crack a joke about it. She was even more resilient than I thought. “Watch it.”
I had just finished donating another round of blood for Danielle’s stock. Being as that she could only drink from me, I figured it was a good idea to have a supply of bags and bottles of my blood in the fridge. I couldn’t promise that I’d always be around when she needed to feed. Plus, I knew she still felt uncomfortable about drinking from the vein. It was easier for her this way, and I didn’t mind. I’d been withdrawing blood all afternoon. Because of being immortal, my body would heal itself and the amount of blood would regenerate within minutes. So, now seemed like as good of a time as any to set aside some blood for her.
“In all seriousness,” she said, rubbing her hand along the forearm of her other arm, “thank you for doing this for me.”
“Of course.” I clasped my hands together. “Okay, so we’ve established that you’re a crazy-fast runner now, we’ve practiced shifting and we’ve got a pretty good supply of my blood ready to go.”
Charlotte ran her fingers through her hair before picking at her bright red nail polish. “I suppose we can go over compulsion and memory implantation now.”
Danielle’s eyebrows lifted. “Memory implantation?”
Charlotte rolled her eyes, brushing her off. “Yes. How long have you been here again?”
“Ten years, thanks to Aiden.”
“Right,” Charlotte replied, regaining her composure. “Anyway, yes. As vampires, we can compel people to believe whatever we tell them. But we also have the ability to share memories with them.”
“Like, get into their minds?”
“Exactly.”
Danielle shivered.
“Care to practice?” Charlotte offered.
“Sure.”
“Julian,” my sister said, grabbing me by the arm and tugging me over. “You can be my assistant.” She turned her attention to Danielle. “Now, Danielle, I want you to take Julian’s hands. Good. Now, look into his eyes—and I mean really look into them like you’re connecting with his very essence. Are you locked in?”
Danielle stood before me, confused but growing more confident with each passing hour. Considering what she’d gone through in the past twenty-four hours, she was handling everything surprisingly well. I cracked a smile at the way she was looking at me so intensely, forgetting to blink. Yet, from what I could tell, her efforts were paying off. I could feel the presence of her mind within mine. Normally, I hated when people got into my head. Granted, it was usually my siblings messing with me. But with her... I don’t know why, but I trusted her. Before, trusting Danielle would have come fairly easily. She was a human—and I was her superior. But now, she was a hybrid. The tables had turned, and now, if anything, I should be the one fearing her. Granted, she was only beginning to grasp the magnitude of her power.
